When running the converter under Devices I changed the Disk Controller to SCSI LSI Logic SAS, then when it failed I imported the resulting vmdk into VMWare Fusion and made it boot from the Win7 Install DVD, I let it run a 'Startup Repair', I then rebooted it back into Windows Setup from the DVD and followed the steps from 'Continuum':Īfter boot is finished click on the CMD-button and run regedit. Click the Add New Entry button to add a new windows boot entry to the boot record on the imaged disk - i set mine to the drive "Boot"Īnd then you're done - power off the functioning VM, and open the newly created one - everything should boot just fine. Easy BCD will ask if you want to load the new boot record thingy you just created - say yes.ĥ. Then using Easy BCD - Deploy a new boot record on your bootcamp partition (make sure you pick the right drive from the dropdown list!)Ĥ.

Boot the functional VM, and download and install the free Easy BCD Tool from NeoSmart ( )ģ. Take the vhd Disk Image and add it to another, functioning virtual machine.Ģ.

Once you get the non-bootable image completed, and the "Failed" error, do this:ġ.

I think the problem is that the Apple Boot Camp Utitlity substantially mangles the windows boot record - you need to have it re-written to run as a VM. Hey - I went through the same crappiness trying to get my Windows Boot Camp Partition off my MacBook- I finally fixed it! I'll post later and let you know how the repair and subsequent customization works.

So, what I'm guessing is that when I installed Win7, it might have written some MBR code (Converter recognized the partitions), and the initial boot back into OS X wiped that out (subsequent boots into Win7 - Converter did not see the partitions.) for Converter to have recognized it, the disk must have had some MBR code on it somewhere for it to see the partition initially. Just a curious behavior on part of the interaction of Windows 7, OS X, and EFI. So, I'm glad I got the VM moved over beforehand. The first time I used the Apple Boot Camp utility to change the boot drive back to OS X, Converter didn't recognize the drive partitions any longer after being booted back into Win7.

On another note, Converter did run on it (I'm not sure why it recognized the GPT disk partition) the first time on the MBP with the fresh Win7 load, and got up to 95%. I'm going to boot the VM up with the Win7 install CD and do a "repair" to see if it fixes the boot issue, shut it down, and then have Converter run against the VM on the ESXi server again afterward to see if the issue is solved. Well, the vmdk is there on the ESXi system - Converter actually got up to 95% before it failed on the last steps (customizing the VM) - it transferred the whole VM over, just didn't get to the final steps of customization.
